U.S. TROOP LEVELS:

_October 2007: 170,000 at peak of troop buildup.

_Oct. 31, 2009: 117,000

CASUALTIES:

_Confirmed U.S. military deaths as of Nov. 2, 2009: at least 4,354.

_Confirmed U.S. military wounded (hostile) as of Nov. 2, 2009: 31,545.

_Confirmed U.S. military wounded (non-hostile, using medical air transport) as of Oct. 3, 2009: 38,917.

_U.S. military deaths for Oct. 2009: 8, the same as July 2009 for the lowest monthly death toll since the war began.

_Deaths of civilian employees of U.S. government contractors as of Sept. 30, 2009: 1,442.

_Iraqi deaths in Oct. 2009 from war-related violence: at least 364, the fourth deadliest month this year. Many of the deaths were due to two vehicle bombs that exploded in Baghdad on Oct. 25th. September saw relatively fewer casualties, with 238 killed, and was the second least deadly month for Iraqis since the AP began tracking war-related violence in May 2005.

_Assassinated Iraqi academics as of Sept. 18, 2009: 431.

_Journalists killed on assignment as of Nov. 2, 2009: 141.
